Serving greasy food to demanding customers at Mel's diner, Alice (Linda Lavin) bonds with her oddball co-workers – another aspiring singer, Belle (Diane Ladd); wise-cracking, ex-truck driver Jolene (Celia Weston); sweet, ditzy Vera (Beth Howland); and her gruff boss, Mel (Vic Tayback).
